Finding the Right Project Manager for Your Small Business

As a business owner, you’ve probably heard about project management. These two words make a huge difference in any enterprise, and they’re something you need to get on top of straight away to see success. Even in the starting stages, your ability to manage a project is make or break. Otherwise, there’s no chance of cohesive and workable results.

Of course, when you’re just starting, you’ll have no choice but to manage projects yourself. But, you didn’t sign up to be a project manager. Communication

Part of the reason why project management is so important is because it provides a go-to for everyone. That means you, your team, and your clients. As such, you need to make sure that any applicant for a role like this has winning communication skills. They should be adaptable, friendly, and able to juggle different conversations at once. Take plenty of time to pay attention to how they communicate their answers in their interview. It’s also worth offering trials where you observe how they communicate information from your team back to you. If they pass that test, you can bet they would be a useful asset to have.

Delegation

In many ways, a project manager’s role is to make your life easier. You want them on board to take a whole load of tasks off your shoulders. And, one of those tasks is delegation. A project manager effectively takes a project and works out what needs doing where so that you don’t have to. However, success depends on their ability to spread roles to get everything done. A good bet would be someone who’s had a leadership role in the past. They’ll be used to handing out jobs, and shouldn’t let you down when the time comes.

Passion

Project managers become the faces of the projects you pass to them. As such, you need them to be passionate about your business. They’re the ones who will get clients excited, or boost their teams to provide the best work possible. They need to have a contagious love for the products or services you offer. Test this by considering how personalized their resume is. And, be sure to ask plenty of questions about your business itself. That way, you can make sure that their passion is genuine and contagious.
