Tips for Parents Looking to Advance Their Careers

  • Know Your Stuff – If you are looking at advancing in your current job role, maybe you are doing a senior executive job search, knowing as much as possible is key. Do your research and stay ahead of the game. After all, part of being a parent is being able to retain various bits of information to make sure your home and work lives run smoothly.

  • So apply this to your job role to make sure that when the position you have your eye on opens up, you are more than prepared and qualified. Network within your industry and make sure you are up to date with any upcoming changes and advances to help you prepare for the job you do now and anything you may progress to in the future.

  • Find A Mentor – Look for someone more experienced in the role and find ways to work with them and assist them on a day to day basis. Learn everything they know and take the initiative to do more and adapt your working style to help you stand out as someone to watch within the company. Alternatively, help newer staff members to hone their skills and become better at what they do. this will show you are not only capable of learning new things yourself, but also help to train any future staff you may be in charge of to create a fully trained hardworking team and be a valuable asset to the company.

  • StudyStudying can be time consuming and for a busy parent, it isn’t something you can always be sure you can fit into your already hectic schedule. One way of learning as a parent is to look at online courses. This will allow you to learn at your own pace in shorter time slots as and when you can fit it into your day. Maybe you can ask your employers if they offer any on the job learning options to help you study at work. This will show your willingness to progress within the company and stand you in a good position when job roles higher in the company become available as you will already be showing willing when it comes to learning new things and putting in the extra effort required for the position.
